We here at One Brick Chicago HQ were thrilled to learn last week that Chicagoan Lisa Nigro was awarded the Presidential Citizens Medal. Lisa is the founder of Inspiration Cafe.
A former Chicago police officer, Lisa got a wagon, filled it with coffee and sandwiches, and distributed the sandwiches to homeless people in the Uptown neighborhood. Over time, the wagon gave way to a van, then a bus, then a six-month lease in an Uptown storefront to set up a more permanent home for the Inspiration Cafe. Twenty years later, Inspiration Corporation offers dignity and hope to homeless and impoverished people with the intent to promote self-sufficiency.
Lisa was honored with 12 other Americans at the White House, and was selected from 6,000 nominees.
